vote.direct vs SurveyMonkey

SurveyMonkey is a great survey tool, but it is not a voting platform. This comparison explains why elections need identity verification, ballot secrecy, and audit trails: features that survey tools simply were not designed for.

Understanding the difference between surveys and elections can save your organization from legal liability.

Disclosure

This comparison is written by one of the platforms in it

vote.direct publishes this comparison and sells one of the products in it, so read it as a vendor making its case rather than as independent research. Everything below about a competitor was read off that company's own public pricing and documentation pages in August 2026, and where a competitor is the better choice this page says so and says why.

Where we are weakest: independent reviews

vote.direct has 6 public third-party reviews: one on Capterra and 5 on Trustpilot, all of them 5 out of 5. Trustpilot's profile displays a TrustScore of 4.1 rather than 5.0, even though its own histogram reads 100% five-star, because a TrustScore is a weighted average that starts a new profile near 3.7 and only moves to the real mean as reviews accumulate. Both numbers are honest; that one is theirs and we do not get to change it. 6 reviews is not a track record either, and no board should choose a voting platform on the strength of it. ElectionBuddy, Simply Voting, and OpaVote have all been running elections far longer and have the independent reviews to show for it. If review volume is your deciding factor, they win it outright and this page will not talk you out of that. What we can do is show you every review we have in full, including the parts that are critical of us, and link them so you can confirm we did not edit them.

Where we are different: you reach the team that builds it

What vote.direct has instead of a review history is direct access. The support number, (512) 222-8191, reaches the founder, Oday Brahem, who is also the engineer who builds the product. Call it, text it, or email, any day of the week including weekends, and the reply comes from the person who can change the software rather than from a first-line queue that has to escalate to find out whether something is possible.

If vote.direct does not yet offer a capability and you cannot find it elsewhere in the market, call or text the founder. When the requirement fits secure, compliant elections, the same team that hears it will work with you to understand it, design and build the capability, and support its rollout. We want to earn your business by closing that gap, not by asking you to settle for a fixed feature list. Scope, timing, and cost are agreed before custom work begins.

Secure, Transparent, and Easy-to-Implement HOA Voting Solution

Anonymous reviewer, Non-Profit Organization Management. 5 out of 5 on Capterra, May 2026.

vote.direct provided a secure and genuinely anonymous voting solution at a time when our HOA urgently needed an alternative election platform. [sensitive content hidden] personally worked over a weekend to help prepare a complete proposal for our Board and answered every question clearly and patiently in non-technical language. I especially appreciated the platform’s focus on voter verification, auditability, ballot secrecy, and compliance while still keeping the process simple and affordable for the Association to implement. In our case, setup would have required only a few minutes of effort from management or the Board.

What they marked as cons: I honestly did not identify any major negatives during my experience. Because the platform offers strong security and compliance features, there is a lot of information available, so organizations unfamiliar with election terminology may initially need some guidance. Fortunately, [sensitive content hidden] was extremely helpful in walking through everything step by step.

Quoted in full and unedited. The bracketed redactions are Capterra's own: it strips personal names out of review text. Both refer to the founder.

Read it on Capterra

That review is worth reading in full because of what the customer chose to lead with. They were not asked about support, and they wrote that someone at vote.direct worked over a weekend to prepare a proposal for their board and answered every question in non-technical language. It is the same claim this page makes about founder-led support, made by someone with no stake in repeating it.

Both halves of that come from the same fact: vote.direct is small and founder-run. It is why there are only 6 public reviews, and it is why you can get the founder on the phone. A large organization buying on vendor track record should weigh the first. A volunteer board that needs a real person when a vote is live on a Sunday should weigh the second. Which matters more is a judgment this page cannot make for you.

Competitors change their pricing and features without notice. If you work at one of these companies, or you are a customer who finds something here that is out of date or wrong, email [email protected] and it will be corrected. Every other way to reach us.

The verdict

vote.direct or SurveyMonkey: which should you use?

SurveyMonkey is survey software rather than an eligible-roster election workflow. It does not provide vote.direct's one-ballot-per-credential control, anonymous or sealed-ballot modes, result certificate, or hash-linked audit package. Its cheapest paid individual plan is $39 a month billed annually, against a free election up to 25 voters ($4.99 once per election above that) on vote.direct, which is built for roster-controlled organizational elections.

Choose vote.direct when

  • The outcome is binding — a board seat, a budget, an assessment, a bylaw change.
  • You need one accepted ballot per eligible roster credential, not a request at the top of a form.
  • You need anonymous or sealed-ballot modes that keep voter identity out of organizer views, results, and exports.
  • You need to export the configured roster, verification summary, result certificate, and audit package for review.
  • You want direct access to the team that can change the product: (512) 222-8191 reaches the founder by call or text, any day of the week. If no platform offers a capability you need, the team wants to earn your business by scoping it with you, building it when it fits secure elections, and supporting the rollout.

Choose SurveyMonkey when

  • You are gathering opinions, not votes, and nothing turns on the result.
  • You need advanced survey logic, panels, or market-research reporting.
  • You already pay for SurveyMonkey and the questionnaire is genuinely non-binding.

What vote.direct costs: Flat rate per election: Free for up to 25 voters, $4.99 for 26–50 voters, $9.99 for 51–100 voters, $19.99 for 101–200 voters, $24.99 for 201–400 voters, $69.99 for 401–1,000 voters, $149.99 for 1,001–2,000 voters. Above 2,000 voters, talk to us. Email verification is included in every tier, SMS in every paid tier. Government ID verification is $3.00 per voter. You are charged once, when you publish. Building and previewing an election is free. Full pricing.

⚠️ The hidden cost of using surveys for elections

While SurveyMonkey may seem cheaper or even free, using a survey tool for formal elections exposes your organization to legal challenges. A single contested election can cost thousands in legal fees, far more than the cost of a proper voting platform.
